Adding fuel to flag debate fire at FINA Junior Worlds opening ceremony

The New Zealand Junior Women begin competition today at the FINA World Women’s Junior Water Polo Championships in Volos, Greece.
The opening ceremony was held on Sunday night, where the New Zealanders were presented with this flag to accompany them at the ceremony.

The flag – ironically – is the Australian Red Ensign, which is simply a red version of the Australian National flag. It is for use only at sea and officially never on land, but was widely used for the first half of the 20th century.

But before long the fun was over, and the tech-savvy team used their iPhones to parade with the real New Zealand flag – with the blue background and four stars of the Southern Cross – well, at least for now.
