Spain made easy work of the Kiwis tonight, 23-2 in the second group match of the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia (game kicked off at 5:10am Wednesday NZ time).
(3-0, 7-1, 5-1, 8-0)
New Zealand kept the Spaniards at bay in the first quarter, keeping the net dry for the first few minutes, and eventually holding Spain to three goals in the first eight.
Spain awoke in the second, scoring seven goals to New Zealand's one and Spain settled the result in this quarter. Caitlin Lopes da Silva converted from an extra-man play for New Zealand's first goal for the match.

The Spanish defence was consistently tough, making blocks and goalkeeper saves left, right, and centre; causing trouble for the Kiwis down the shooting end. Defence was promising at the beginning of the third quarter, holding Spain to one goal for over half of the period.
It was an extra-man play again that let Danielle Lewis score New Zealand's second goal of the match.
Spain were never in doubt, and powered through until the end of the game scoring eleven unanswered goals.
It was always going to be tough facing the reigning FINA World Champions from Barcelona 2013, and the Kiwis can now look forward to their biggest match of the championships thus far against Kazakhstan on Thursday. Stay tuned for our preview of the match up on this website.
